Sweater Weather is better weather…or so they say, but it’s FREEZING here in NYC, and I don’t know about you, but I’m just never truly ready for a sudden immediate plunge into winter. However the cooler temps this weekend, that will *warning *only continue this week, mean that it’s finally time to pull out all those chunky knits, sweater dresses, and heavy crochet scarves I’ve been hoarding since the summer pre-fall sales. It’s officially layering season, and the so called sweater dressing obsession is by far the winning breakout trend for Fall-Winter. So just what is the au-currant take on this seemingly humdrum back of the wardrobe staple? It’s all in the layering. Layering knitwear and knit scarves, and pairing chunky sweaters with unexpected trophy items: luxe fur, skinny jeans, fringed skirts, leather leggings, and glam accessories is what elevates that old sweater to that oh-so-fab sweater!
But there’s a story here. The high fashioning of the old boyfriend winter weekend sweater is nothing terribly new, but what is new is how it’s styled, cut, accessorized, and worn. The winter white palette craze means that your sweater weather allowance would be best spent on soft detailed and intricately woven off whites and creams. And be fearless with how you pair it! I fully plan to take my knit sweater and crochet scarf, that my incredible Grandma handmade for me last Christmas, amazing I know, from a crisp Sunday walk in jeans, to a fun dinner downtown dinner. On cold evening, I’ll pair my knitwear with a flowing silk maxi skirt and an embellished belt or slimming cigarette pant and stilettos. The key is to off set and balance a chunky, thick, or oversized sweater with something slimming and sleek. Now you know what I’ll be wearing to combat this coming polar vortex ridden week! Remember, no matter how chilly it gets, you can still look chic.
