Dixie Derby Day Party

Happy Derby Day! The running of the Kentucky Derby is a glorious excuse to throw a little cocktail and viewing party and get all dressed up. And who doesn’t love to put on a great hat enjoy a delicious cocktail on a spring Saturday afternoon? But for those of us who aren’t big bourbon drinkers (and sorry to my Kentucky readers who are likely gasping in horror right now) the classic Mint Julep leaves us searching to find something comparable and feeling a terrible sense of FOMO Fear Of Missing Out

That’s why this Derby Day I’ve teamed up with General Beauregard’s Dixie Vodka to bring us all a little taste of the south. Dixie’s Mint Vodka is wonderfully fresh and refreshing and pairs perfectly with a little sweet lemonade and a lot of crushed ice to make an nearly effortless cocktail that will place you straight in the winner’s circle will all your friends.

Follow the recipe bellow and watch my Dixie Derby Day Video here to see how I make the Dixie Julep and put together my Derby Day viewing party! And if you’re loving my Derby Day Fashion, check back tomorrow morning for a full post on my party hostess outfit! Watch the 2015 Kentucky Derby on Saturday May 2nd at 6:30pm EST on NBC.

The Dixie Julep
Serves One

1-1.5 ounces Dixie Mint Vodka
3 ounces Sweetened Lemonade
1 / 1+ cups crushed ice
2 sprigs fresh mint
slice/wedge of lemon
1. Fill your silver mint julep cup almost to the top with crushed ice. Add in the vodka and top with lemonade just until you see the liquid come to just about the top of the crushed ice.
2. Take a drink stirrer or straw skewer and pierce the lemon wedge and mint leaves, threading the garnish to the top and add to the drink. Serve immediately reminding your guests that they may have to stir the drink a bit to mix the mint vodka and lemonade. Tip: you can always add a straw!
