Taking the bold military style fashion trend from catwalk to sidewalk this season can seem like a daunting task, but learning a few tricks to soften this sometimes severe style is the key to making it work for your everyday wardrobe. So just how do you “make it work”?
Feminine Fabrics and Front Lines
When going for a military inspired ensemble it’s fun to try working within a single monochromatic tone. I love olive green this season and is without a doubt the street style color of the military. But when pairing and layering in olives it is important to always have at least one piece in a more feminine soft fabric. Here I have chosen a lighter chiffon blouse and similar harem style slacks, so that despite the menswear feel of the pants the entire look feels more flowing that full frontal. You want to concentrate on keeping that feminine silhouette to avoid looking like you picked up some cargos and camo from the army navy store.
To break up a monochromatic base, I love using cream and cognac tones to add depth and layers to this look. Try simple inexpensive scarf like the one above from H&M. I like to layer it down the front and belt it at the waist for warm without bulk. A rounded pair of tortoiseshell shades are less predictable than aviators and a luxe cognac leather tote is nice change from a camo printed purse. No one wants to be bludgeoned with a trend… remember it’s not a theme party.
Give them the bold shoulder…
When looking for tops or jackets in military-inspired fashion remember that the epaulettes that once adorned officer’s uniforms give great structure on a woman’s frame. The exaggerated shoulder makes your waist look smaller and creates that wonderful triangle shape across your upper body. Adding height and width at the shoulder will additionally make your arms look longer while elongating your neck, all these things combined make you appear taller, longer, and leaner. I’ve taken the Vince Camuto top above and decided to highlight it’s wonderful draped sleeve, by eliminating on sleeve all together. This creates a diagonal line across the chest which feels slightly Grecian and feminine amidst the stronger more masculine lines.
Go for GOLD
Metallic and shinny gold detailing is key when pulling off the military look. I opt for gold buckles, belts, and bracelet stacks when pulling this look together. I also love the addition of “bars and stars” as an ultra appropriate nod to the military elite. In this case I accessorized the look with a uniquely beautiful (and made in America) opal north star by Emma McKinstry Jewelry. When it comes to shoes either metallic heals for evening, or for everyday I love a shinny black healed boot. Just enough of a nod to the tall military boot with a bit of feminine chic.
