Faking Fall When It’s Still Warm

I don’t know about you, but despite the lingering summer weather, I am so ready to break out and break in my fall wardrobe. It might be hard for some of you to start day dreaming about cozy sweaters and slouchy boots when you can break a sweat just standing still on the sidewalk, so here’s my 3 first-step tips to help you fake fall when it’s still warm. Because Starbucks is already serving pumpkin spice lattes ladies!

Time for Texture & Tweed

Layer. It. On. One easy way to start transitioning your wardrobe that I have relied on for several seasons now, is adding a light tweed blazer to your tried and true go-to summer looks. It may surprise you but It REALLY WORKS. If you’re at all like me you probably have an overflow of polka dot dresses and skirts from summer and the black, white, navy, or red combos still feel and look very appropriate in fall if you style It correctly. Simply add a tweed blazer over your shoulders to bring the look it’s fall feel. I suggest opting for a slightly oversized fit, menswear inspired cut as It looks more youthful and on trend, but also helps to elongate your silhouette. You can also use the blazer over any denim piece, or to take a white on white look (like my ‘borrowed from the boys” look version bellow) and warm it up with tweed and buttery leather accessories.

Let’s Talk Color

Jewel tones. Whether it’s burgundy, Evergreen, Cobalt, Ruby, and Amethyst, this fall’s color range is all about richness. And I think the easiest way to dip into wearing richer colors, like I just mentioned, is with a sweater. All jewel tones pair perfectly with denim for day, and look extremely elegant with a cream based white on those crisp fall evenings. And yes you can still wear those white jeans! You can also pop a jewel toned piece with a warmer color piece. Think the colors of changing leaves: orange, cognac, golden mustard, or rust- rest assured that any jewel tone pairs beautifully with the entire warm hue family.  Grab this mustard cashmere classic, this two toned burgundy sweater this rich green boyfriend sweater. And it when it comes to accessories? BIG BOLD GOLD. Think 80s chunky gold earrings and bracelets. Anything gold anywhere is golden this fall.

Statement Shoes

For shoes it’s white bright and bold. Believe it or not a fun white boot, bootie, or heel is popping up in every shoe collection this fall. Here’s the perfect white boot from Sam Edelman- has a touch of 70s and a comfortable block heel so you can wear them all day and/or night. My white soft leather pumps (above) are a current suitcase staple right now as I pop back and forth from NYC and Palm Beach, but if you really can’t comprehend a white shoe after Labor Day, or when snowy sidewalks are just around the corner in your area, then try a metallic or velvet bootie to keep your look on trend. I’ve been wearing silver boots again this season (obsessed with  these silver cutout booties ) and adore how they can instantly take a skinny jean from day to night. If you’re a shoe lover then be on the lookout for shoes with adornments and attitude: it’s all about embellishment. For flats, find mules and slides with oversized bows, for boots go with western heels or boots with detail and flare, and say yes to anything animal print!. I bought these leopard d’Orsay slides last fall and have already brought them back out in rotation as they are quickly becoming a transitional classic: great with white jean, black jeans, and any dark denim.
